Dwelling: "Workhouse Bedwellty"

Census Place: Bedwellty, Monmouth, Wales

Name Marr Age Gender Birthplace Rel. Occupation
Rachel HOGAN W 42 F Tredegar, Monmouth Pauper
John HOGAN U 6 M Tredegar, Monmouth Pauper

I have omitted the other residents - there were 265 at the time! John Hogan is my Great-grandfather who married Lydia Lewis (Noted below living in Stockton-on-Tees...). He is listed here with his mother, Rachel. It seems they experienced terrible family tragedy - John's Father, Erasmus, died 2 years previously from an accident at work. His death certificate records he died of "Paraplegia, Softening of the Cord, and Exhaustion".

Bedwellty Workhouse An old photograph of Bedwellty Workhouse. In 1929, when the Workhouse system was abolished, this became St. James' Hospital - where my cousin David Jones was born in 1959: St. James Hospital
